WEST MILTON – A new evaluation system for teachers has been created to better access how they perform in the classroom. The system was on the list of topics discussed at the Milton-Union Board of Education meeting on Monday, June 17. Superintendent Dr. Ginny Rammel shared her excitement about the new system.

“The teachers have put a lot of hard work into this – it has been truly a great thing for the schools,” Rammel said.

The Ohio Teacher Evaluation will be implemented this fall for the 2013-2014 school year. The system is designed to evaluate teachers based on their growth and development as teachers, as well as the growth and development that their students have made in the classroom.

According to the Ohio Department of Educaiton, the evaluation will have two components, each weighted at 50 percent. One is a teacher performance rating, determined from a professional growth plan, two 30-minute observations and walkthroughs. The second is a student academic growth rating, taken from various tests and value-added data. The final summative rating will range from Accomplished, Proficient, Developing or Ineffective.

WEST MILTON – With its street levy running through the end of 2014, the West Milton Village Council has started discussing the levy’s future.

The 3-mil levy has been renewed several times since its first time on the ballot in 1984 and has continued to bring in $93,000 for the village. The money goes toward storm sewer system maintenance, pavement repairs, street sweeping, trash patrol, debris pick-up, and snow and ice removal.

With nearly three decades gone by, costs have gone up, leaving council with a decision to either renew the levy or replace it.

“Our prices have continued to rise,” Municipal Manager Matt Kline said. “This is 1984 revenue with 3 mills generated back then.”

A 3-mil levy today would produce a little more than $200,000, and a 2-mil levy would create around $130,000.
