BETHEL TOWNSHIP - Bethel Elementary School raised a total of $1,140.03 to be donated to the Heifer Project to donate bees to families in third world countries as their service project this holiday season. “A bee can do a lot of things and you can do a lot of things with bees,” said second grader Faith. When Damian, a second grader, was asked what he thought about giving bees he said, “It feels good. If I am going to be a veterinarian I have to start caring for others.” “I lost a tooth and I got $5. I was going to give it up for the in-ground pool my mom and dad are building, but I wanted to give it to this,” said the second grader Tommy. “These are the things we should teach kids. You have to teach them these core values beyond academics in a testing society,” said Principal Jodi Petty. Petty challenged the 470 elementary Bethel Bees to bring in one dollar each. If the elementary students raised at least $470, then Petty would match it and make a donation of $470 herself. The students themselves raised $670. “The whole goal is for our school to be a benefit to someone else,” said Petty. “I am really surprised at the support the community gives our school no matter what we are involved in.” The Heifer Project, founded by Dan West in Miami County, is an international organization that donates live animals to families in order to help meet their basic needs and become more self sufficient. Donated animals are as small as honey bees and chicks to as large as pigs, sheep and cows. The money raised by the Bethel Bees will go to purchase honeybees. A package costs $30 and it includes the bees, the box and hive, as well as training in bee keeping. Megan, a second grader from Mrs. Henry’s class said, “We are raising money for people who don’t have money for food.” Erica said, “It is special because we are giving bees and we are the Bethel Bees.” “Some people don’t have money or food so we can sent money to those who need help,” said little Samantha. |
