BETHEL TOWNSHIP - New Fire Chief, David Stitzel, was officially sworn in at the Bethel Township meeting on Tue. Aug. 24, and others were honored for their service to the community. “I consider myself a customer service fire chief,” said Stitzel. “Everyone is a customer. Not just the public by the members of the department too. They support me and everybody else. It is my job to protect them. They are my second family.” With more than 27 years of experience of public service under his belt, Stitzel will be leading a group of approximately 40 dedicated firefighters. “The department has a lot of outstanding people who have a lot of motivation,” said Stitzel who is proud to serve this community and Riverside as well. At Riverside he is a full time Battalion Chief and has been for five years. Before serving Riverside he served the City of Huber Heights as a full time firefighter and paramedic. In his years of public service he was also a police officer for Enon for 10 years. He has also taught at Sinclair as an executive fire officer for 15 years and will continue to do so. “I have a lot of friends here in this community. I have family in this area also,” said Stitzel.
He is not the only member of his family who is actively pursuing the firefighting path. His three brothers are too. One is an EMT and two are paramedics. His dad is retired from the New Carlisle Fire Department and his mother was a dispatcher for New Carlisle. When the World Trade Center collapsed, Stitzel was there within 12 hours. “It was so massive. In the beginning it was so out of control. There was a massive amount of people trying to help,” he said. Stitzel is also one of the developers of the Ohio FEMA and he has been at multiple tornados throughout the state and Kentucky. In other township business, Chief Robert Counts, Billie Ray, James Dicks Jr. and Gary A. Nasal were all recognized for their outstanding service to the community and given plaques of appreciation. In regards to these men who have served the Bethel Township area these past months Micheal Gebhart said, “I can’t tell you how lucky we were to have them this summer.” |
