BETHEL – Bethel Local Schools are following in the footsteps of many districts in the area of staff retiring and rehiring. On June 13 at the Board of Education meeting and public hearing, the Board approved the rehiring of recently retired employee Mark Durst. Durst was a Maintenance Person at Bethel Schools and, as there were no public objections voiced during the hearing, Durst’s rehiring was approved during the meeting. Durst was rehired at 60 percent his previous salary. Superintendent Jeff Cassell said there will be more employees to retire and be rehired. “We’re getting [the employees] back at a reduced cost and therefore we have all the experience but we’re not paying for all that experience,” Cassell said. “I think it’s a win-win for the district.” |

BETHEL TWP. – Beginning on June 6, Bethel Local School District will be making changes to their facility by implementing Ohio House Bill 264. The program is titled The Energy Conservation Program and, according to the Ohio government website, it allows school districts to make energy efficiency improvements to their buildings and utilize the cost savings to pay for the changes. The program is helpful because districts can borrow funds without the added hassle of passing a ballot issue. The district applied for the program with assistance from a consultant from Energy Optimizers, USA, said Jeffrey Cassell, Superintendent for Bethel Local School District. “Bethel’s been fun because it’s been a puzzle,” said Energy Optimizers President Greg Smith, “You have to look at in different ways.” |

BETHEL TWP. - The object that had everyone amazed at the Bethel Board of Education meeting was not teachers or students – from this century, that is. Junior High/High Principal Tim Zigler presented a photo given to the school by Russ Siler. The photograph was a class photo from 1901. Previously, the earliest year they had was 1902. “That’s been well preserved,” said Board president Don Whitaker, “That’s unbelievable.” Zigler said it is undetermined as of yet where the photo will be displayed. Interested parties can presently view it at the high school office. Also presented was the final collection from the earned income tax levy voted in this past November. For this fiscal year the total collected was $31,009. This is less than the Department of Treasury projection of about $40,000. |

BETHEL TWP. - In a special board meeting on April 20, Bethel Local Schools reinstated the position of Elementary Art Teacher and Technology and Business Teacher, currently held by Clarissa Derr and Brett Brookhart, respectively. These positions were originally eliminated in a March 14 resolution to help cut costs. But according to Superintendent Jeff Cassell in an April 21 letter to parents, preliminary data from the state as far as funding would allow the restoration of two of the 16 cut positions. He wrote, “Because of community meetings and your input, we will be bringing back two teaching positions. These positions have been discussed at the community meetings and the community has indicated that they want these positions back. We have listened. . . we hope to bring back more after we are finished with this fiscal year.” Cassell also emphasized the need for a levy to “bring back more programs and to upgrade educational programs.” To give input or ask questions, call the central office at 845-9414 or email Cassell at

BETHEL TWP. – The Dayton Gems had a charitable weekend, raising more than $10,000 for Kyle Terrian, an 18-year-old Bethel High School graduate who has a rare form of cancer. The Gems held a silent auction and a post game jersey auction on Saturday night during their regular season finale against Quad City. The Gems also donated a portion of the ticket sales from Saturday as well. In all, the Gems will donate $10,039.20 to the Terrian Family. “I would like to thank our fans for their tremendous support for this great cause. It was a great weekend for everyone involved, but most certainly the Terrian family,” said Dayton Gems President Joe Greene. The Gems have been reaching out to the Dayton community over the past several weeks to bring in as many people for the evening as possible. The attendance for Saturday’s game was 5,198 – the largest crowd of the season to watch a Gems game. Friends, family members and nurses who know Kyle were in attendance to show their support for Kyle and his family. The Bethel High School Pep Band played during the pregame entertainment and Kyle’s younger brother, Ryan, lead the Dayton Gems team out on the ice prior to the start of the game. Kyle Terrian himself was able to attend the game for a short while on Saturday. His family did a ceremonial puck drop prior to the game on his behalf and Kyle sat with his family in the stands for the first period of the game. “It was great to be out of the hospital and see my family and friends,” said Kyle Terrian. “I was very surprised to see everyone there.” Silent auction winners are asked to call the Gems front office at (937) 275-7777 to claim their prizes from Saturday night’s silent auction. The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
