BETHEL TOWNSHIP - The public hearing at Bethel’s Board of Education meeting Monday night offered commendation and complaint about how things are run. The board heard comments from the community and shone a spotlight on a member of the staff.

Lynn Minneman, Bethel’s English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor, was commended for her work with the district’s ESL students. Minneman made a presentation about her program for the board and brought two of her students to show off their improved English skills.

“They are doing so well in their English classes,” said Minneman.

She explained how students’ language levels are assessed and different stages and methods of language learning.

Minneman also asked those present at the meeting to participate in language exercises so that people could better understand the language barriers that her ESL students face. In one exercise she asked two people to have a conversation without any words containing the letters ‘T’, ‘O’, and ‘A’. In another, participants had to spell out every word they said.

Community member Rick Slagle voiced his dissatisfaction with the state of the Bethel athletic fields. He is a member of the crew of volunteers that paints the football field each week and addressed the board with his concerns.

PHONETON - The Ohio National Road Association unveiled a new interpretive sign in Phoneton on Monday, September 26. The sign is the seventeenth to be installed along the Historic National Road.

“It is important to know our history and where it takes us in the future,” said Ohio National Road Association President Dean Ringle.

The new sign commemorates the history of “Phonetown,” as Phoneton was once known. The sign was installed next to the old AT&T building that gave the town its name. The building, on the corner of National Rd. and SR 202, was once a major center of communications for the region from 1893 until 1936.

BETHEL TOWNSHIP - Bethel Local Schools and the Bethel Education Association (BEA) finally came to a three-year collective bargaining agreement after months of discussion that went into effect last Thursday. The Board of Education barely passed the agreement, however, coming to a 3-2 split. Don Whitaker and Deb Watson gave the “no” votes.

The main issue was concerning the teacher’s salary schedules. The new contract included what is called a “hard freeze” - no wage increases or step column advancement. Whatever the teachers are being paid now is exactly what they’ll be paid three years from now.

“They [the teachers] have not taken a cut in pay,” said Watson, “You have to give up something you already have to be considered a cut.”

She added that at many of the community meetings held earlier in the season, Bethel residents said if they were to pass another levy, the teachers should take a cut in pay.

“I told the community I would be their voice at the table,” Watson said.

BETHEL – Bethel Local Schools are following in the footsteps of many districts in the area of staff retiring and rehiring.

On June 13 at the Board of Education meeting and public hearing, the Board approved the rehiring of recently retired employee Mark Durst. Durst was a Maintenance Person at Bethel Schools and, as there were no public objections voiced during the hearing, Durst’s rehiring was approved during the meeting. Durst was rehired at 60 percent his previous salary. Superintendent Jeff Cassell said there will be more employees to retire and be rehired.

“We’re getting [the employees] back at a reduced cost and therefore we have all the experience but we’re not paying for all that experience,” Cassell said. “I think it’s a win-win for the district.”

BETHEL TWP. – Beginning on June 6, Bethel Local School District will be making changes to their facility by implementing Ohio House Bill 264.

The program is titled The Energy Conservation Program and, according to the Ohio government website, it allows school districts to make energy efficiency improvements to their buildings and utilize the cost savings to pay for the changes. The program is helpful because districts can borrow funds without the added hassle of passing a ballot issue.

The district applied for the program with assistance from a consultant from Energy Optimizers, USA, said Jeffrey Cassell, Superintendent for Bethel Local School District.

“Bethel’s been fun because it’s been a puzzle,” said Energy Optimizers President Greg Smith, “You have to look at in different ways.”
