BETHEL TOWNSHIP – Can a Buckeye and a Boilermaker get along? In the case of former Bethel Board of Education members Carl Bowman and Don Whitaker, the answer was a surprising yes. “For 18 years he and I have gone back and forth,” said Whitaker, grinning, “It’s always good-natured kidding, though.” Like the few games where Purdue would beat Ohio State, Whitaker would just have to wear his Purdue sweater to the board meeting that week. He and Bowman even crossed the state line once to see the two schools play each other, although it was too traumatic of an event to repeat again, they tell tongue-in-cheek. Two decades of experience Bowman and Whitaker retired this December after a collective 42 years of experience on the board. |

BETHEL TOWNSHIP – Monday’s Bethel Board of Education meeting included several presentations of future developments and past accomplishments. Josh Floor, from the business Energy Optimizers, USA, gave the board a quick summary of what has been added to the building during the recent renovation project. New HVAC systems have been installed in the elementary and high school buildings, as well as direct digital controls for the system. A new solar thermal hot water system has also been installed, along with many other “green” upgrades to the school.
These upgrades include PC energy management systems, water conserving faucets and lighting efficiency improvements. The $624,000 project should save the school an estimated $60,000 annually. Board members Carl Bowman and Don Whittaker were awarded plaques for their outstanding service to the school and community, as both gentlemen will soon be leaving the board. Bowman has served 20 years on Bethel’s board, while Whittaker has served 18. Both men gave short yet sentimental speeches giving thanks to their community. |

BETHEL TOWNSHIP - Candidates for public office in Bethel Township met for a “Meet the Candidates” event hosted by the Bethel Township Historical society on Oct. 27. Each of the candidates prepared a statement and was open to questions from the public. Incumbent Cliff Wray and hopeful Brian Swinderman are both running for trustee. At the meeting Wray and Swinderman discussed their goals for the township. Wray has served as a township trustee for the past eight years. He asked voters to consider the accomplishments the trustees have made during his time in office, including improvements to Fire and EMS services, sewer and road improvements, and decreased annexation. His goals for Bethel Township are to continue the fight against annexation, maintain a conservative budget, and preserve the “Bethel way of life.” Swinderman’s goals for Bethel include encouraging small local businesses, improving the township website, and increasing communication with Bethel residents. He believes that the website could be used more effectively to communicate with residents and to support the Bethel business community. Swinderman also stressed the importance of keeping Bethel rural while building and supporting small businesses. |

BETHEL TOWNSHIP - The boys of the Bethel High School soccer team wrapped up a winning season last Saturday with 17 wins and two losses (only one in the regular season). Although their hopes of a district title were cut short by Springfield Catholic Central, the Bees did clinch a Cross County Conference title - their fourth one in a row. What makes their season even more impressive is that the team is mostly younger players. The team’s 16 players include three freshmen, six sophomores, six seniors, and a junior. There are many reasons for the team’s success, but the underclassmen point to the seniors and their leadership. “Our seniors are leading us very well,” says freshman Nicholas Wanamaker. “They try to work us harder, so we can achieve more.” The seniors this year are Kyle Hamlin, Joe Zimmerman, Will Gresham, Dustin Elsass, Ben McIntosh and Jordan Watson. Throughout the season the team was led by Zimmerman with 45 goals and 25 assists, Hamlin with 34 goals and 20 assists, Gresham with four goals and seven assists, Watson with one goal and two assists, McIntosh with one goal, and Elsass with one goal. |
