BETHEL TOWNSHIP - New Fire Chief, David Stitzel, was officially sworn in at the Bethel Township meeting on Tue. Aug. 24, and others were honored for their service to the community.

“I consider myself a customer service fire chief,” said Stitzel. “Everyone is a customer. Not just the public by the members of the department too. They support me and everybody else. It is my job to protect them. They are my second family.”

With more than 27 years of experience of public service under his belt, Stitzel will be leading a group of approximately 40 dedicated firefighters.
“The department has a lot of outstanding people who have a lot of motivation,” said Stitzel who is proud to serve this community and Riverside as well. At Riverside he is a full time Battalion Chief and has been for five years.

Before serving Riverside he served the City of Huber Heights as a full time firefighter and paramedic. In his years of public service he was also a police officer for Enon for 10 years. He has also taught at Sinclair as an executive fire officer for 15 years and will continue to do so.

“I have a lot of friends here in this community. I have family in this area also,” said Stitzel.

The Bees were ready for this one.

After an offseason in the weight room, a new defensive coordinator and a few attitude adjustments, Bethel came out and took it to Northridge in a dominant 42-6 showing Friday to open the season at L.E. Slagle Memorial Field.

Jordan Holtvogt set the tone early in the game, rushing for 201 yards in the first half on 12 carries and scoring three times as he and the rest of the Bethel running backs initiated contact and ran through the Polar Bears at will.

“I figure my linemen are getting hit on every play blocking for me, I might as well take a hit and get as many yards as I can for them,” Holtvogt said.

And Bethel coach Brad Clendening liked the hitting he saw.

“Jordan ran hard — he has a whole new attitude for his senior season and he is running like a man. It was great that he had an opening game like that,” Clendening said.

And he wasn’t the only one, either.

“I was very happy with the way they all ran,” the coach said. “Our fullback (Reed Pelphrey) ran well, too. All these guys are running for carries. The harder they run, the more carries they will get.”

Holtvogt ran so hard, though, he didn’t get a chance to tote the rock in the second half.

Of course, Bethel was already up 42-0 and it could have been more.

STAFF REPORTS
Brown News Service

BETHEL TOWNSHIP - It was almost like an instant replay … just with different uniforms.

Chelsy Swackhamer had three goals and an assist — just like she did in Bethel’s season opener against Milton-Union — powering the Bees to a 4-1 victory over Dayton Christian Thursday at home. Bethel also defeated Milton-Union 4-1 in the opener.

Morgan Rigsby also scored for the Bees, while the defensive tandem of Kelsey Paden, Katelyn Cripps, Kim Williams, Hannah Figlestahler and Krista Burchett and midfielder Leighann Alexander protected goalkeeper Kayleigh Marshall.

“Chelsy scored three goals again and was a big force,” Bethel coach Doug Rabe said. “Our defense was also a big force. Dayton Christian is pretty strong and came at us hard, but the defense played well.”

Bethel, now 2-0, hosts National Trail Sept. 2 to open Cross County Conference play.

BETHEL TOWNSHIP - There were a lot of young murmurs resignating throughout the elementary auditorium from children waiting to make new friends, learn new things and embark on the journey of their grade school career at the kindergarten orientation at Bethel Local Schools.

The event was kicked off with a warm welcome for the two kindergarten teachers Rebecca Frye and Abby Manson who received an excited response back from the kindergartners that seemed like it wouldn’t stop.

So the parents and Bethel school staff could get down to business to explain to the parents everything they need to know as newbies to the system as well, they sent the children on their first bus ride.

As the kindergartners were packing on the bus they made observations like “why are buses yellow?” and “look at that big mirror up front!”
Abigail Stokes said her favorite things she got for school were her two backpacks.

“I got a backpack, stickers to put on everything, scissors, and glue and everything else I need. I have two backpacks and one is pink. Pink is my favorite color,” she said.

Sara Newton added, ”Mine has flowers on it.”
