TIPP CITY - More and more people are opting to start their own businesses these days in light of the current job market. Barbara Etherington is one of them.

Etherington has lived in Tipp City for 22 years, but is a native of Dayton. She has a master’s degree in Marketing and a bachelor’s degree in Finance, both from Wright State University. Education is very important to Etherington, but her family is her first priority.

“It took 15 years to complete my education from start to finish while working full time and raising a family,” she said.

In March of this year Etherington started Cybertary Tipp City. Cybertary is a franchise which provides administrative support and specialized services, ranging from bookkeeping to documentation. Etherington started Cybertary because she was looking for an opportunity to use her organizational, coordination and communication skills in her own business.

“I wanted to base my business in my home in Tipp City so I could have better life balance by eliminating the long commutes and rigid schedules,” she said.

Etherington evaluated the Cybertary Franchise for four months to make sure it met her needs before signing her franchise agreement. After signing, Etherington went through intense training and coaching from the Cybertary founder, Patricia Beckman, including a checklist of all the things that needed to be done before her business was launched.

“Patricia was there to help every step of the way, but Cybertary Tipp City is my business and I make the day-to-day business decisions. Patricia and other Cybertary franchisees are always available for help and advice,” said Etherington.

She is the sole proprietor of Cybertary Tipp City. She does the work herself and occasionally hires sub consultants to be on her team.

The Cybertary franchise offers more than 150 services ranging from presentation preparation and data processing to bookkeeping and graphic design work. Services offered by Cybertary in Tipp City have included bookkeeping, contact database management, marketing mailings, email blasts, website updates and outgoing telephone calls.

“My sub consultants are people who want to work part time from their homes to do specialized work for my clients. All work is completed remotely using advanced technology to communicate and work with clients who pay only for productive time on task,” Etherington said.

Cybertary in Tipp City has served seven clients since it opened including a corporate pilot, financial planner, medical billing company owner, sports apparel company owner, business consultant and business coaches.

Etherington hopes to eventually expand her business to the point where she manages six to eight sub consultants who are busy 10 to 15 hours per week.

“The most challenging part of owning a business is time management. A small business owner needs to spend time on their business, not in their business, so delegation of the administrative tasks is one way to free up time for the business owner to do what he or she does best,” she said.

Etherington also hopes to expand the services offered by Cybertary in Tipp City once the business grows.

“The most exciting part of my business is getting to know my clients, what their needs are, and then finding an efficient way to fulfill their needs,” said Etherington.

When she is not busy with her business, Etherington likes to travel with her husband, play golf, spend time with family and friends, and cruise around in the family’s little red Corvette.
