TIPP CITY - Several months into a $3 million streetscape project and construction on Main Street has hit a snag. Unexpected delays mean that phase one of the project—the work between First and Third Streets—will be complete later than expected, but phase two will begin earlier. The project is still anticipated to be completed by mid-October.

“We can’t expect to do a project this large without having issues somewhere along the line,” Councilman Pat Hale said.

The original schedule projected a July 6 phase one completion date. Unforeseen issues, including extra work on the water lines and the surprising discovery of a buried tank, set construction back five days. The tank was an underground fuel tank in the project area, according to Utilities Director Christy Butera. The contractor now anticipates that the first phase will be complete July 31.

In order to finish the project by Oct. 15, Double Jay Construction requested that they be allowed to start on phase two in July, before phase one is finished.

MIAMI/MONTGOMERY COUNTY - A Vandalia police chase turned into bad news for Tipp City when a fugitive got loose and local schools were put in lockdown. Within an hour, though, the man was apprehended and police let schools out safely.

At about 1:10 p.m. Tuesday, Butler Township Police recieved a “theft in progress” call from the Walmart at Miller Lane. Two suspects had attempted to steal an X-box and videos. One of them was stopped by a Walmart loss prevention officer and brought into the loss prevention office. When the second suspect was brought in, he bit two of the employees, leaving one of the female officers with a serious wound.

“It was quite a chunk,” Butler Chief of Police John Cresie said.

Then the first suspect started fighting and both of them jumped in their car (later found to be stolen in Harrison Township). At that point, all of Butler’s police units were unavailable due to existing runs.

TIPP CITY - Looking for ways to make up for losses in funding, Tipp Monroe Community Services (TMCS) asked city officials last month to allow the organization to stop paying rent for its downtown headquarters. On Monday, June 3, Council approved a resolution that suspends the organization’s rent payments indefinitely.

The city provides TMCS $17,700 a year for various recreational programs and activities, $10,000 of which is paid back in rent to the city each year. The city pays utilities for the old municipal building, which houses TMCS. Forgiving the organization’s rent would allow TMCS to keep all of the $17,000.

A drop in tax income from the state cost TMCS $22,000 last year. Support from Monroe Township dropped from $17,700 to $5,000. The resolution was approved 6-1, with councilman Bryan Budding voting no.

TIPP CITY – After a yearlong process, the Tipp City Veterans Memorial now has a memorial as well as a custom made statue reminding us to “remember why” those who serve do it.

“Not only do we honor the men and women who are fighting now, but we pay tribute to all who have ever served,” Mayor Dee Gillis said at the statue’s dedication.

The life-size bronze statue depicts a soldier of this generation, balancing his young daughter on his knee and pointing at the bricks of the memorial. The statue was created by Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmaltz. Schmaltz specialized in Christian sculpture, and wanted to expand his art to military sculpture as well, specifically for American veterans.
