![]() Rarely do I get a sense of warmth and well being when I open my inbox on my email, as I did this morning. I felt a rush of compassion, hope and kindness as I read these words: “I am excited to announce a fundraising initiative that I want our employees to participate in. This fundraising campaign will give us the opportunity to do our part in an effort to help the people of Haiti in the wake of their devastating situation. The McDonald‘s family has a long history of being philanthropic in the mist of tragic events and that aligns with the philosophy of Scott Family McDonald’s being a dependable neighbor in our communities. We have been very blessed as a company through these challenging times to continue to have success while most others around us are struggling. We have the opportunity to reach out and help others who are in desperate need; I hope you will join me.”
This email was sent by my boss, Benny Scott Jr., who owns 14 local McDonald’s Restaurants. I do the marketing for Benny, and have always known what a giving and kind person he was. When someone that is successful in business gives back, whether to their own community or in this case over-seas, it always warms my heart to see them give in ways many of us cannot. Mr. Scott has always been generous in his home community of Piqua, so I am never surprised to see his name on a donor list. Even better, most people have no idea what he contributes to, because he doesn’t do it for the acknowledgement. He doesn’t do it to make himself feel better. He doesn’t do it for the awards or the recognition. He does it because it is the right thing. As he states above, “We have been very blessed as a company through these challenging times to continue to have success while most others around are struggling.” So what does he do? He helps those that are struggling. Daily…weekly…monthly. Our company helps out with United Way, March of Dimes and other non-profits. We donate food, coupons, certificates and more to those trying to raise money for local fundraisers. Our company supports academics, athletic departments, choral groups and other school functions. The list truly goes on and on. To give and not ask for anything in return is truly a blessing. To offer to our employees the chance to give back as an organization is powerful. To have us all care enough to do this for people we have never met is truly the gift. So I’d like to say thank you to the “Mr. Scotts” and others that take the initiative to help others that are not in the position to help themselves. Thank you for the opportunity to help contribute to the “bigger cause”. Here we are, helping in Haiti. Thank you for helping me put to use my sense of compassion and my wanting to help.
